Organic farmers also avoid genetically engineered seeds, which are too new to have been properly tested. GMO produce is cheap to produce because it resists herbicides and pests, and maximizes yield, but we have no way of knowing what else about the plant has been changed.
Many health officials have expressed concerns about the long-term effects of GMO foods on the human body and brain. By eating organic, you ensure that you are not a guinea pig for science experiments.
Buying local organic produce is also much better for the environment. Most fruits and vegetables at stores have been shipped hundreds or thousands of miles, which means a lot of fossil fuels went into getting that food to your table.
Organic produce is often available locally, but the smaller scale means that the farmers cannot survive on the same narrow profit margins of large-scale farms. By paying a bit more for local organic produce, you can support your local economy and help the planet as well.
While it is understandable to ask, why organic food is expensive compared to others, there are very good reasons for this! Organic food is high quality, healthy, and safe, which costs farmers more money and produces less produce to sell.
